The Holiday Season is wonderful, but am i one of the few people that’s glad it’s over?

I love the decorations, being able to put a smile on someones face with the thoughtful something you picked up for them, the pretty packages and cards, getting a chance to catch up with family and friends you don’t see any other time of year.

I don’t love the traffic, it takes an extra 20 minutes to get anywhere. Or the negative attitude, people can just be plain mean if they aren’t getting their way. I endured this firsthand when I worked retail and now feel badly for the poor sales associates who have to listen to someone rant b/c they’re out of ___. I don’t love the family members who don’t get back to you, so you aren’t sure if they’re coming to dinner or not, I’ve learned to set an extra place or 2 over the years for those.

So for those reasons and, a few I’m too nice to put onto the internet, I’m quite happy to be through with Christmas and onto the New Year. My husband’s birthday is coming up, we’ll be heading to France in March, and I’m actually excited for tax time… yes I’m odd.  All these things mean a happy new year!

There are also a million home improvement projects I’m excited to get cracking on! We received a compressor from my parents this year, and yes I’m that girl that is just as excited about a power tool as my husband. They also gave us a bunch of attachments so we can get straight to work!

MOLDINGS are first on the list. We did our flooring quite a while ago and to my ever present embarrassment we haven’t put our moldings back up. So we have gaps between the walls and flooring, this creates wonderful little cracks for cat fur, dog food, and all kinds of icky things to hide. I was vacuuming up just those things this weekend and now we can finally put the trim up! So off to the Home Improvement Store we went, picked out the most basic trim we could find b/c at my core I’m in love with simplicity. Found the perfect shade of white, if you’ve read my earlier posts you’ll know I love the names of paint colors, Polar Bear is our newest acquisition. Our new compressor will make the installation process a whole lot easier, and it will make painting it easier too! We’re going to spray the boards this weekend and hopefully in the next 2 weekends be able to cut and put up all our new trim! I’m excited!

This is just the beginning too! Now we can spray our cabinets to paint them the shade of white I’ve been dreaming about since looking at them when we bought the house! New doors will come after that. Onward and upward, I love the idea of the house feeling more like it’s our taste, putting equity into it, and just getting my hands dirty so I can say. Yes, I did that.

Happy New Year!

It’s not how many times you get knocked down December 19, 2011

It’s how many times you get back up.

Long have I been on a journey to better myself, to make something of myself, to simply be happy with who I am and where I am in my life.

It’s been a lengthy, pothole strewn ride, but worth every moment. I’ve been knocked down by others and on more than a few occasions knocked myself down. But I always pick myself up, or dig myself out of the hole I’ve buried myself in.

I’ve lost, but in the end I’ve gained because I’ve made myself better.

I keep moving forward; it didn’t always feel like I was moving ahead but inch by painful inch I got to a better place. And pat myself on the back for that.

I take the little victories.

I take pride in accomplishments even if they’re modest.

I find the things that make me joyful, small or large from any avenue I can find them and hold them tight. I can’t tell you how often the little things save me from something shadowy and ominous hovering in the back of my mind. It’s like a little ray of light coming through the darkness reminding me that ‘this too shall pass.’

“Like a bird with broken wings, it’s not how high he flies but the song he sings.”

I never make a big, long, daunting list around the first of the year. And this year isn’t any different. What is different is my focus. This year it isn’t all about me. For the last couple I made it all about me while I was picking myself up, cleaning myself off, and becoming someone I can love. But this year is all about ‘pay it forward.’ So ‘my’ resolutions aren’t going to be about me, they’re going to be about helping make things better for others. They’ll come to me as I go and they don’t have to be huge philanthropic ventures, but I can surely make a difference in other peoples lives. I owe it to the universe.

Has it really been two months… ‘Tempus Fugit’! December 14, 2011

Time Flies!

I don’t know where the last 2 months have gone but boy have they flown by! It seems like we’re busy every weekend with family events and such. November held both my birthday, my grandfather’s 87th birthday and of course Thanksgiving! That’s a lot to cram into one month but we did it and we’re still standing and happily married… insert shock and awe here!

This year was my 30th birthday and it was truly the best birthday I can remember! We had a lovely dinner with family at Buca di Beppo the Friday before, I am in LOVE with their food, I could eat their lemon chicken and salads morning, noon and night! It was a wonderful night surrounded by family and a very lively atmosphere. The next day we headed down toSeattle to spend the night at the Pan Pacific Hotel. If you are ever thinking of visitingSeattle I highly recommend this be the hotel you stay at, it was incredible! The room we stayed in was on the very top floor and had a beautiful view of the city from one side andLakeUnion from the other. And it was bigger than our last apartment… I could go back right now! My lovely husband then took us to dinner at El Gaucho, and we had the most amazing meal of our lives… we’re still dreaming about that steak and the tomato that was roasted with parmesan cheese on top… yum! The next day we headed to Century Link Field to watch the Seahawks. We fully expected to see them lose but they shocked us all and beat the Ravens! What a wonderful weekend, we returned home from Seattle and the house was still standing. Best… Birthday… Ever!

Thanksgiving was the usual race from one family to the next. Eventually we’re going to have to choose one family to spend the day with b/c all the running around is exhausting. And by the end of the day we’re so full we can barely move, let alone drive home! How disappointing that we’re blessed with 2 wonderful families that can cook. Lol.

We did our usual Black Friday shopping and it was mayhem. Now we usually enjoy the chaos and the people watching and we just have a good time. I think this year marked the last year we tempt fate and shop at the stores on BF… it was insanity and not the fun kind. It was hectic and stressful and we didn’t even get a chance to purchase what we went in for… I think we’ll purchase online from the comfort of our couch next year! J I say that now but just wait; I’ll see something we HAVE to go out for next year.

And here we are halfway through December and our shopping is complete! D. put all the lights up and our house looks adorable, we tried to put our inflatable penguin on the roof… that didn’t go so well… I thought we were going to lose both D and the penguin on that one. Luckily I can report that everyone is safely back on the ground and there were no penguin related injuries in the N. household this holiday season. We put the tree up last weekend and decorated it… it’s a bit of a Charlie Brown Christmas tree… it’s has some issues, but that kind of suits us as a family.

We’re doing a lot of donations as gifts this season, from NOAH to Skagit River Salmon to Autism Awareness to Kidney Disease. It feels good to give back. We have so much and there are so many worthy charities in need of help this year. I encourage everyone to find a charity and give back. Whether it’s money or your time, they will greatly appreciate it and isn’t that really what this season is about?

Happy Holidays Everyone!
